BIBLE STUDIES ARCHIVE.....The Word of God is Positive

“But Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”   John 6:68

The text in context: a look at Chapter 6 and the Gospel of John

I.  Jesus feeds the 5000

Ø      Crosses the sea of Galilee
Ø      Passover was drawing near
Ø      Jesus feeds the 5000 followers bread and fish from five barley loaves and two fish, with leftovers!

II. Jesus walks on water

Ø      The disciples leave and try to cross the sea of Galilee
Ø      A storm arises and difficulty ensues
Ø      Jesus approaches them, walking on the water, and calms the storm
Ø      They arrive in Capernaum, and the followers continue after Him

III. Jesus is the Bread of Life

Ø      The followers had come for more food
Ø      Jesus explains HE is the real food – believe (v.29)
Ø      Jesus is the fulfillment of manna in wilderness  - refer to Ex. 16:15 (v. 31)
Ø      Jesus is Living Bread  - eat of His flesh and have eternal life (v. 48-51)

IV. Many disciples leave Jesus

Ø      The message is too hard
Ø      There is unbelief among many
Ø      The twelve remain
Ø      Peter proclaims that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Features of John’s Gospel:

      focuses on glory
evangelistic in purpose: it is written that we may believe and have life
uses longer discourses as opposed to parables
emphasizes seven signs as opposed to miracles
includes seven “I AM” sayings – including “I am the Bread of Life”
it can be considered a relational and responsive gospel

For even more insight, take time to compare John 6 with the Synoptic Gospels:

Matthew 14: 13-33;                     Mark 6:32-51;                              Luke 9:10-17
